Types of Mulch

Brick Red Mulch

Clean wood is shredded and/or chipped and colored with a "brick red" dye, which is very safe. This dye is also found in some foods, such as hotdogs, to give them a redder color. This product retains great color even in dry, bright sunlight conditions. It is a little deeper or darker red than the bright red. This same color is used in making bricks. It is generally preferred over bright red.

Black Wood Mulch

It is dyed with a rich black tone, processed to achieve a consistent, nicely sized product with excellent color retention and aroma.

Cedar Mix

This mulch has a high cedar content and a nice cedar aroma. Often used because of its natural cedar oils, which are believed to repel insects. This is a light, fluffier mulch. It has a golden to light brown/tan color.

Enhanced Forest Mix — Pittsfield, MA — 2nd Alarm Trucking & Excavation Inc.

Enhanced Forest Mix

Color-dyed brown, mostly shredded and some chipped wood fiber. It looks like Forest mix but has brown dye added and very little bark. Some prefer this because it looks natural and holds its color much longer than forest mix, but it does not decompose and feed the soil as fast as forest mix.

Forest Mix Mulch

This is the basic bark mulch. This is well-aged, brown, non-dyed mulch made up of softwoods, hardwoods, and sometimes a little hemlock. It has high bark content, giving it a much richer color and longer-lasting color retention than some other products on the market, which are made of only aged, shredded, chipped trees and shrubs. This product is superior to those products that have minimal bark in them. Those products without much or any bark lose their natural color quickly when exposed to the sun and air. They also take nutrients away from the plants instead of adding to them. Our forest mix adds nutrients back to the soil for healthier plantings.

Hemlock Mix

This bark mulch has a large percentage of pure hemlock bark in it, which gives it a nice natural reddish color. It is ground a little finer than the forest mix. It has a nice natural aroma.
